The Skills Gap

Fitness gets you
to the climb.
Technique gets you over it.

Most gravel riders train the engine and leave handling to chance. This camp flips that: every key ride day starts with a skill, the ride that follows is where you use it – coached in real time, filmed, and reviewed the same day.

01
Assess
Day 1 bike setup and a first look at how you handle loose terrain – tyre pressure, position, and your starting point.
02
Learn
Dedicated skills sessions on cornering, braking, body position and line choice – drilled in a safe area, then repeated on the trail.
03
Apply
Longer mixed-terrain days on gravel tracks and sierra passes, with your coach riding alongside to correct you in the moment.
04
Refine
Video review, a 1-on-1 with Carlos, and a written skills plan – so the progress keeps going after you fly home.
"Gravel rewards the rider
who can read the ground."
Why Granada · Why This Camp

Real terrain.
Real coaching.

1
⛰️

Terrain That Teaches

Gravel tracks, loose climbs, sierra passes and technical descents around Granada – one varied playground, so every skill gets a surface to be practised on.

2
🎯

Skills First, Then Kilometres

Every key ride day opens with a technique focus and ends with a video debrief. You go home with better habits, not just more hours in the legs.

3
🎓

Taught By A Pro-Team Coach

Carlos Cobos Márquez is part of the professional Movistar Gravel Squad and coaches professional and semi-pro racers – the same standards, adapted to your level.

Technique Curriculum

Train the skills.
Not just the legs.

📐

Cornering & Body Position

Weight distribution, outside-foot pressure and line selection through loose, rutted and off-camber corners.

🛑

Braking & Descending

Modulating the brakes on loose surfaces, staying off the rear wheel, and reading a descent before it reads you.

⛰️

Climbing Traction

When to sit, when to stand, and how to keep the rear wheel hooked up on loose, steep gravel.

🔍

Line Choice & Terrain Reading

Spotting the fast line early – surface changes, drainage ruts, washboard, sand – and adjusting before you hit them.

👥

Group Riding on Gravel

Dust, loose stones and no room to draft: how to ride close, signal early and stay safe in a mixed-terrain group.

🔧

Bike Setup & Mechanics

Tyre pressure, tubeless basics, and fixing a puncture or chain issue on the trail – so a mechanical never ends your day.

Gravel isn't won on the flats. It's won in the corner you took cleanly, the descent you didn't brake too early for, and the line you chose three seconds ahead.

Questions

Everything you
need to know.

What is the Granada Gravel Skills Camp?
A 7-day gravel cycling camp in Granada, Spain, from May 9 to 15, 2027, run by Portcycling – Associação, a non-profit cycling association from Portugal. It is built around technique: cornering, braking, climbing, descending, group riding and bike setup on loose terrain, with video analysis and technique coaching on the key ride days.
How much does the Granada gravel camp cost and what is included?
€2175 per person, with six nights in a double room and daily breakfast included. The price also covers the technique sessions with video analysis, the bike mechanics workshop, the mechanic and support vehicle on ride days, and a 1-on-1 technique review with a written skills plan. A €300 deposit is paid on confirmation. A single room upgrade and bike rental are available on request.
Who is the coach at the Granada gravel camp?
Carlos Cobos Márquez, part of the professional Movistar Gravel Squad. He coaches professional and semi-pro racers – among them Calum Johnston, Pablo Lospitao and Mauricio Moreira, winner of the 2022 Volta a Portugal – and leads the technical sessions on this camp. Darina Balabai (founder of Portcycling) and Artem Shcherbyna (cycling guide) complete the team.
What will I learn on the camp?
Cornering and body position, braking and descending on loose surfaces, climbing traction, line choice and terrain reading, riding in a group on gravel, and bike setup and basic mechanics (tyre pressure, tubeless, fixing a puncture). Your riding is filmed and reviewed with your coach, and you leave with a written skills plan.
How do I get to Granada for the camp?
The closest airport is Granada (GRX); Málaga (AGP) is the larger alternative airport. Arrival is on Sunday, May 9 and departure on Saturday, May 15, 2027. We confirm transfer options after booking.
Do I need off-road experience?
No. The camp is built to teach it. If you've never ridden gravel, you'll start with the basics; if you have, you'll fix the habits holding you back. We tell you what to work on either way.
What bike should I bring?
A gravel bike is ideal – tubeless-ready with wide tyres if possible. Tell us what you ride in the application and we'll advise on tyres and pressure before you travel.
How are groups organized?
By comfort and skill on rough terrain, and by fitness for the longer rides. Small groups, so your coach can actually watch how you ride and correct it.
What fitness level do I need?
Comfortable riding 2–4 hours at an easy-to-moderate pace on mixed terrain, with two longer days of 4–5 hours. This is a skills camp, not a race – it rewards curiosity more than watts.
Do I need a power meter?
No. It helps if you have one, but the camp is about handling, not numbers. Tell us what data you have and we'll adapt.
Is single room accommodation available?
Yes, a single room upgrade is available on request. Please mention this in your application and we'll confirm availability and the additional cost.
Can I rent a bike through the camp?
We can arrange a rental on request. Please indicate this in your application form and we'll confirm options and pricing.
What language is the camp run in?
The camp runs in English. Portuguese, Spanish, and Ukrainian are also spoken across the team, so most riders find someone to switch to if English isn't their first language.
Is this camp suitable for women?
Absolutely – and actively encouraged. Our community is mixed and inclusive. Darina and Carlos both coach and ride, and groups are set by skill and comfort, not gender.
Can you accommodate dietary needs?
If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies, please mention them in your application and we'll inform the hotel in advance.
What if I need to cancel?
The deposit is non-refundable. Full and partial refunds follow our Cancellation Policy – we recommend travel insurance.
